On Monday, 5th Jan 2026, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu M.K Stalin, announced a free laptop (Ulagam Ungal Kaiyil) scheme for the students of the state. Under the scheme the government will distribute 20 lakh laptops to the eligible students. The Tamil Nadu Government launched a new program on January 5, 2026, called “Ulagam Ungal Kaiyil Scheme.” This program gives free laptops to students. The name means “The World in Your Hands” in Tamil. The government wants to help students learn using computers and the internet. With these laptops, students can attend online classes, read digital books, and use learning websites easily.
By giving laptops to students, the government hopes they will learn computer skills better. It also helps students who don’t have computers at home. A government company called Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu (ELCOT) is helping run this program. They plan to give laptops to 20 lakh students in two rounds. The first round started on January 5, 2026, and will give laptops to 10 lakh students. Students in their last year at any government school or college in Tamil Nadu can get a free laptop.
The laptops are from popular companies like Dell, Acer, or HP. They have good features – Intel i3 or AMD Ryzen 3 processor, 8 GB memory, 256 GB storage, and Windows 11 or BOSS Linux software. Each laptop comes with MS Office 365, six months of Perplexity Pro AI, and a bag to carry it. The government has set aside Rs. 2,000 crore to run this program in 2026.
